Plusieurs décennies se sont écoulées depuis l’engouement pour l’histoire des mentalités. Mais, avec les « tournants » survenus dans l’histoire de l’histoire, certains ont parlé de la fin, sinon même de la mort de la vieille histoire des mentalités qui aurait laissé la place à la plus jeune histoire des sensibilités ou des représentations. Ses protagonistes appartiennent à de nouvelles générations d’historiens, d’Alain Corbin et Pascal Ory à Hervé Mazurel qui, tout en reconnaissant leur dette intellectuelle envers l’histoire des mentalités, se sont réunis autour de nouveaux thèmes et méthodes : le toucher, le goût, l’odorat etc. Sans passer en revue toutes ces contributions, mais s’arrêtant d’une manière chronologique sur les plus marquantes d’entre elles, cet article se propose d’offrir une matière de réflexion sur l’évolution d’un concept à l’autre : de la « sensibilité » de Febvre à l’histoire des mentalités puis des sensibilités de nos jours. Les hésitations et les préférences des historiens pour un concept ou un autre constituent surtout un moyen de s’interroger sur les continuités et les discontinuités, ainsi que sur les ressemblances et les différences dans leurs préoccupations. Et de constater somme toute que les uns et les autres se rencontrent dans la même quête des tréfonds psychologiques de l’histoire.
