ENTEROTOMY MANAGEMENT FOR FOREIGN BODY REMOVAL IN LABRADOR RETRIEVERS

Abstract
A male Labrador Retriever was brought to the Veterinary College Hospital with a history of anorexia, poor appetite, vomiting and weakness. Diagnosed as intestinal obstruction due to foreign body based on signs, palpation and radiographic contrast examination. The action in this case was a Laparoenterotomy surgery to be able to remove the foreign object. The purpose of enterotomy is an incision in the intestine, both the small intestine and the large intestine, which is disturbed or because of a foreign body or the possibility of gangrene in the intestine. Obstruction of the intestine often occurs in the large intestine or small intestine, causing enlargement of the small intestine (Yulianto, 2000). Premedicated with Atropine sulfate at a dose of 0.04 mg/kg S/C and anesthetized with Xylazine at a dose of 1 mg/kg I/M. General anesthesia was induced with Propofol 5 mg/kg bw and to maintain the dog under anesthesia, 1.5% isoflurane inhalation anesthetic was used. Postoperatively, the dogs were given cefotoxim at a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight twice a day for 7 days intravenously 3 days and 4 days orally, atropine sulfate at a dose of 0.04 mg/kg body weight subcutaneously once a day for 3 days, meloxicam with dose of 0.2 mg/kg body weight and ranitidine at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg body weight intramuscularly once a day for 3 days. Antiseptic dressings were done daily and the stitches were removed on the 12th postoperative day. It can be interpreted that dogs are avoided from items that are easily swallowed by dogs such as ropes, threads, pieces of cloth, cables, etc. because of their habit of eating carelessly and attention to animal behavior and suggestions so that when he eats foreign objects and shows symptoms of reduced appetite , vomiting, pain in the stomach immediately take the animal to the vet for immediate treatment so that there is no delay in treating the animal.
