L’étude propose une analyse des moments les plus importants d’une histoire des traductions du grec, du russe (ou du slavon) et de l’anglais vers le français des prières chrétiennes-orthodoxes, au xxe siècle et au début du xxie siècle. Cette analyse porte sur les textes des prières personnelles, destinés à la pratique religieuse individuelle des fidèles. Sont étudiés six livres de prières en tout, dont cinq imprimés. Trois ont été publiés en France par des maisons d’édition religieuses, majoritairement monastiques, un volume est paru en Italie et un autre en Belgique. Le sixième est posté sur la toile, étant hébergé par le meilleur blogue orthodoxe francophone (« orthodoxologie.blogspot.com »). La conclusion de l’étude est que ces démarches traductives ont toutes eu comme objectif principal le bon déroulement (traditionnel et dans la langue du pays) de la pratique rituelle, de la vie de prière des fidèles. Elles ont donc été sous-tendues par une nécessité pastorale intrinsèque, et mettent en évidence une véritable conscience (méta)traductologique des traducteurs concernant l’aménagement d’une tradition (traductive). Il s’agit d’une traduction qui se construit moins à travers des retraductions successives et davantage par l’intermédiaire d’un réseau d’intertextualité traductive, dont il est également question dans l’étude.
