Abstract
was a religious leader amongst Ontario Mennonites at the turn of the twentieth century, exercising her gifts and abilities in both sanctioned and unconventional spheres of spiritual activity. When Mennonite women of Kitchener, Ontario, formally organized a sewing circle in 1908, officially called the Sister's Aid of the Berlin Mennonite Church, Barbara was elected as the first 'chairman' of the organization, which had as its purpose "to aid the poor and distressed, and to do general mission and charitable work." The initiative of the Kitchener women, alongside their counterparts in Waterloo who simultaneously formed the Waterloo Charity Circle, represented the beginning of Mennonite women's formal organizational work in Ontario. Recognized as a capable leader for this endeavour, Barbara was also well known as a midwife and one who had inherited the gift of charming, a traditional spiritual healing art, which she used primarily to treat bleeding, burns, and scalds. 1 Agatha Loewen Schmidt (1927-) was among thousands of Mennonite refugees who fled their homes in Ukraine during the Second World War, arriving in Canada with her mother and sisters in 1948.
