Abstract
The fact that these volumes include the preparatory notes for the twentieth and final novel of Zola’s Rougon-Macquart does not indicate that this monumental project is now complete. As predicted (see FS, 73 (2019), 301–02), the dossier of some 1200 pages for the penultimate frame of the series, La Débâcle, will require a two-part volume of its own. At that point, scholars will have access to the entirety of Zola’s preparatory notes for his novel cycle, give or take a few which have gone missing since his widow bequeathed the majority of his papers to the Bibliothèque nationale in 1904. In the case of Le Docteur Pascal, for example, 156 pages of its dossier have not resurfaced since they were auctioned in 1932. What Colette Becker’s edition provides for the very first time, however, is the bulk of the preparatory notes for the novel now preserved at the Fondation Bodmer, just outside Geneva. These had been given by Zola himself to the eminent Dutch critic, Jacques van Santen Kolff, in 1893; and, after the latter’s death three years later, they passed through various private collections prior to finding a permanent place in the Bodmer library in 1951. Access to them, even for specialists, has previously been so constrained that Henri Mitterand, in volume v of his Pléiade Rougon-Macquart (Paris: Gallimard, 1960–67), felt it necessary to cite these notes at greater length than in the case of any other novel in the series. While Le Docteur Pascal itself is in many respects simply a long epilogue, its preparatory dossier is a uniquely important source of insights into Zola’s own reflections on his life and work.
