El objetivo principal de este trabajo es analizar las críticas presentadas por Ludwig von Mises al Estado de Bienestar y las consecuencias del crecimiento del Estado en la defensa de los derechos sociales. A través de una revisión de la literatura, se presentan los aspectos ideológicos y sociales que respaldan la ideología del Estado Social, así como los aspectos político-económicos que llevaron a un Estado burocrático, ineficiente y corrupto. Se concluye que la garantía de la democracia y la ciudadanía ocurre en la medida en que la sociedad sea capaz de imponer límites al poder estatal y promover políticas sociales que hagan efectivo el Estado de Derecho Democrático.
