Abstract

Chronic pain disrupts cognitive processing leading to attention, decision-making, and memory deficits. Although mechanisms remain unclear, it is likely that chronic pain-induced alterations in neuroplasticity and/or dysregulated neurotransmission may be contributing. The hippocampus, key for learning and memory, is innervated by noradrenergic neurons of the locus coeruleus (LC), a sexually dimorphic nucleus crucial for pain regulation. Interestingly, LC-hippocampus projections mediate the encoding of object and environmental novelty and retention of novel object recognition (NOR) memory.
