Abstract
Jonathan L. Zecher, Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Catholic University, is well known among specialists in the history of early Christianity for his studies on the theme of death in monastic literature. For some time now, he has been focusing on the relationship between monastic ascetic theory and late antique medical culture. This monograph is the culmination of his research in this area. The link between the medical art and the ascetic techniques of the monks was first pointed out in a short text by Michel René Barnes in 1997 (‘Galen and Antony: Anger and Disclosure’, Studia Patristica 30, pp. 136–43). Zecher’s study is based on a precise question: why did monastic authors make so much use of medical imagery in their reflections on spiritual direction? It should be noted that the term ‘spiritual direction’ is used by the author in its generic sense, as given to it by Irénée Hausherr, for example, and not in the technical sense it has taken on in modern times. The conviction underlying this questioning is that we cannot fully understand the thinking of these theorists of asceticism without studying their many references to the medical art. In order to situate the analysis of the sources, the author uses a model of interpretation of health and illness proposed for the first time by George Engel in 1977: the ‘psychobiosocial model’. The fundamental novelty of this model lies in the fact that it takes into account not only the patient’s biological and psychological situation, but also his or her social environment. This perspective is well suited to the practice of spiritual direction in monastic settings, and it brings out similarities with the medical art that would otherwise go unnoticed.
