La violence à l’école est vraisemblablement aussi vieille que l’école elle-même. Longtemps invisibilisée ou banalisée, la « violence scolaire » devient un problème public de première importance à la fin du XXe siècle occidental. Cet article propose une analyse qualitative (et secondairement quantitative) d’un vaste corpus de presse écrite québécoise retraçant la production discursive et morale des problèmes de violence juvénile. L’analyse montre que le thème des « gangs de rue » naît d’un contexte politique néoconservateur où l’approche de la « tolérance zéro » envers la petite délinquance est affirmée. Puis, à la fin du siècle, cette lutte aux incivilités colonise l’école. C’est au tour du « taxage », ou racket, de faire l’objet d’une importante inquiétude publique au Québec. Sous l’impulsion d’une lecture psychologique et comportementaliste des désordres scolaires, ces thèmes se métamorphosent et débouchent sur l’intimidation et le harcèlement tels que nous les connaissons aujourd’hui. Le traitement des indisciplines scolaires s’affranchit alors de la figure de l’adolescence dangereuse et se restructure autour de l’enfance vulnérable.
