Abstract
L’auteur a suivi à la trace la propagation du virus du SRAS dans le monde, de février à juin 2003. Au moment de finaliser cet article, on avait recensé dans le monde environ 8 500 cas probables et 810 décès. Un bilan tragique, mais pas aussi meurtrier que d’autres grandes épidémies qui ont sévi par le passé ou qui tuent encore, notamment le sida, la peste, la malaria, la tuberculose, la diarrhée, la rougeole, la fièvre typhoïde ou la grippe. Il tente d’abord de définir ce nouveau virus, appelé syndrome respiratoire aigu sévère (SRAS). Il en examine ensuite les principaux foyers d’infection, notamment en Asie, et sa propagation dans la région de Toronto. Il mentionne le rôle joué à cet égard par l’Organisation mondiale de la santé. Puis, il décrit les effets de la maladie sur le plan financier, notamment dans l’industrie touristique, et sur le plan de l’assurance, dont son impact fut somme toute relativement mineur, tant il est vrai que le SRAS est exclu d’un grand nombre de polices. Enfin, il signale les leçons à tirer de cette crise, notamment sur le plan des mesures destinées à prévenir et à contrôler la propagation du virus.
