Abstract
Mithridate de Cius et son fils Mithridate I er Ctistes sont les « pères fondateurs » du royaume pontique, ainsi que le lien du dernier Mithridate avec la dynastie achéménide. Notre principale source d’information sur leur vie est Diodore (XVI, 90, 2; XIX, 40, 2; XX, 111, 4) : il donne des dates archontiques pour le début (337/36 avant J.-C.) et la fin (302/1 avant J.-C.) du règne de l’aîné Mithridate et compte également les années de son règne et de celui de son fils comme étant respectivement de 35 et 36. Ces petites incohérences s’expliquent aisément. Elles ne doivent donc pas être utilisées pour saper l’autorité de Diodore en ce qui concerne l’événement crucial pour la légende de la fondation de la dynastie : la fuite du jeune Mithridate de Cius à Cimiata (Strabon, XII, 3, 41). Certains chercheurs ont récemment suggéré que la fuite remontait à 314 avant J.-C., mais ils s’appuient sur le récit romancé attesté par Plutarque ( Démétrios , 4) et Appien ( Mithridatica , IX, 27-29), dont les tendances pro-Antigonides sont transparentes. George Syncellus (523), qui précise que le règne des rois mithridatides du Pont a duré 218 ans et s’est étendu sur dix générations (qui semblent inclure Pharnaces II et Darius), apporte des éclaircissements supplémentaires. Cela ne situe pas la prise du diadème après la mort de Séleucos i er en 281 avant J.-C., comme on le pense généralement, mais en 283/82 avant J.-C., lorsque le conflit entre Lysimaque et son ancien allié Séleucos a commencé à s’envenimer.
