Solution Insight of Platform Printed Circuit Board Fiber-Wave Resonance Beyond 28 GHz High Speed SerDes Application

Abstract
Fiber-wave resonance effect with normal fiber pitch 500 μm significantly damages insertion loss when SerDes Nyquist frequency is beyond 28GHz, and potential solutions are desired for platform designers in further generation product development. The industry's well-known methods for PCI-E Gen 4, PCI-E Gen 5, PCI-E Gen 6, etc. applications, such as 10-degree trace routing orientation or normal spread fiberglass to address fiber-wave propagation delay skew nowadays becomes helpless for fiber-wave loss-resonance effect in higher data rate application such as PCI-E Gen 7 with 128 GT/s. This paper proposes analytical equations to predict the fiber-wave resonant frequency depending on selections of printed circuit board (PCB) material, the style of fiberglass fabric, core and prepreg construction, etc. On the other hand, test vehicles had been designed and measured to correlate simulation prediction. The proposed analytical method enables the possibility of promoting further generation PCB solutions from ecosystem advanced technology development perspective as well as the insight of what the market needs from the platform designer point of view.
