Cette communication a été faite dans le cadre du programme Lectures sur le fil, le vendredi 25 novembre 2022 à la bibliothèque de l’UFR de langue française de la Faculté des Lettres de Sorbonne-Université. Mille secrets mille dangers, le dernier roman d’Alain Farah1, est paru à la fin de l’été 2021 au Québec et en février 2022 en France2. Si cet écrivain reste peu connu dans l’hexagone, bien qu’il ait eu les honneurs de la « une » du Monde des Livres en mars, avec un article élogieux de Raphaëlle Leyris3, il est devenu une figure de premier plan dans le paysage littéraire québécois : Mille secrets mille dangers a rencontré un succès critique4 et commercial5 sans précédent, et il a valu tout récemment à son auteur le Prix du Gouverneur général, l’un des prix littéraires les plus prestigieux du pays6. Il serait impossible de rendre compte ici de la richesse de ce texte de 500 pages, qu’Alain Farah a mis huit ans à écrire. Aussi, dans les lignes qui suivent, en présenterai-je la structure narrative, puis les grands thèmes identitaires et existentiels, le tout articulé avec le rapport bien particulier qu’entretient Alain Farah avec la fiction.
