O movimento de oposição à escola tradicional vem estimulando, ao longo das últimas décadas, instituições escolares a repensarem suas práticas educacionais à luz do paradigma da aprendizagem ativa, num grande processo de reforma dos modelos de ensino e aprendizagem que organizam a experiência de estudantes e professores. Apesar de bem recebidos pela comunidade escolar e coerentes com as demandas educacionais do século XXI, representam um grande desafio para gestores escolares. Ao mesmo tempo, a literatura sobre gestão escolar no Brasil tem sido marcada por abordagens relacionadas às teorias políticas, sociológicas e histórico-culturais, pouco centrada nos fenômenos da gestão propriamente dita, dialogando pouco com as teorias organizacionais e da administração estratégica. Este ensaio pretende refletir sobre a relevância e oportunidades para investigações que se proponham a compreender os desafios contemporâneos da gestão estratégica de escolas públicas, articulando novos caminhos epistemológicos que renovem a pesquisa sobre o tema e ofereçam contribuições teóricas capazes de impactar positivamente a prática da gestão escolar no contexto brasileiro à luz dos seus desafios atuais.
