rEnDUS AnnALES DE DéMogrAPhIE hISTorIQUE 2018 n° 1 p. 173 à 203La formation de couples officiellement mariés impliquant des hommes européens et des femmes métisses ou malgaches ne se produit pas de la même manière dans la capitale, Antananarivo, que dans les villages reculés.Le niveau social diffère également : en ville, ce sont plutôt des milieux sociaux élevés qui sont concernés, le lycée faisant office de point de rencontre privilégié, tandis que, dans les villages, les hommes sont souvent des agriculteurs.L'étude des registres de mariages montre que les hommes, européens comme métis, épousent plus souvent des femmes malgaches que des femmes métisses.Encore faut-il rappeler que le nombre de conjointes potentielles classées comme métisses est peu élevé et, dans tous les cas, bien moindre que celui des conjointes potentielles classées comme malgaches.Mais il est difficile d'interpréter ces données car le nombre de ces mariages « mixtes » reste faible.Les femmes classées comme métisses 174 CoMPTES rEnDUS
