Abstract
This chapter focuses on the transformed border security environment in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. After the terrorist attacks, border control ideas and instruments were repackaged as new antiterrorism programs and initiatives that involved more physical barriers, new surveillance, and thickening the borders. Moreover, the issues of migration and terrorism became linked more than ever in securitizing both the debate over migration and the practice of managing migration. The chapter also considers the Mexicanization of the US–Canada border. It explains how the escalating drug war affected the difficulty of getting across the US border.
