Abstract
It has been an honour and a pleasure to work with colleagues in Canada and across the globe to bring together a volume of edited chapters on the broad theme of translation and German Studies to celebrate Raleigh Whitinger's career in the field of German Studies.Raleigh is a well-loved scholar of German literature and culture, an active academic conference participant, an inspiring teacher and dedicated graduate supervisor, and an exceptional editor and translator.Raleigh's scholarship is always engaging and meticulously researched.It is admirably wide-ranging; we remember well attending a conference with Raleigh in England, where one fellow conference presenter asked most sincerely and respectfully during a friendly and informative discussion over lunch, "Is there a German author you do not know about?"Indeed, his publications include discussions of literature and drama by both well-known and lesser-known German authors, especially from romanticism and naturalism but also from other literary periods, as well as edited works and translations.And it is in this context as a committed, widely informed, and very giving scholar of German Studies that he has motivated and supported students at all levels of post-secondary education to seek and gain honour's, master's, and doctoral degrees in German-including the two editors of this Festschrift.Of course, Raleigh's outstanding and generous service to the field of German Studies in Canada as a scholar and teacher at the University of Alberta, and not in the least also as editor of Seminar.A Journal of Germanic Studies for ten years, has been recognized most recently in 2011 by the award of the Boeschenstein Medal, the highest honour of the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German.In his Laudatio marking Raleigh's receipt of the medal, James M. Skidmore remarks: "A key to understanding Raleigh is to remember that he is also a translator.
