Auteur(s): LANNOO M, GILLARD P, KEYMEULEN B, COOSEMANS W, MATHIEU C , | Samenvatting: Transplantatie van pancreaseilandjes is een van de meest beloftevolle behandelingen voor type-1-diabetespatiënten. Tot voor kort waren de resultaten van de overleving van eilandjesgreffen en het bekomen van insulineonafhankelijkheid bij deze auto-immune patiënten ontgoochelend. Enkele jaren geleden slaagde men in Edmonton (Canada) erin om meer dan 10 type-1-diabetespatiënten insulineonafhankelijk te maken na eilandjestransplantatie door gebruik te maken van nieuwe immunosuppressieve therapie. In het elan van deze studie zijn er momenteel wereldwijd transplantatieprogramma’s opgestart om de mogelijkheden van deze therapie te exploreren. Problemen van beschikbaarheid van voldoende materiaal om te transplanteren en de nog steeds aanwezige noodzaak tot chronische immunosuppressie beperken momenteel de mogelijkheden van deze techniek. Basisonderzoek naar stamcellen als mogelijke bron van eilandjes, naar het ontwikkelen van xenotransplantatie en vooral naar het induceren van tolerantie in het immuunsysteem geeft nieuwe hoop dat deze techniek ooit op grote schaal zal kunnen toegepast worden.
