Abstract
Effect of mating on the reproductive fitness of Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798) females (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae)Most insect mating systems are characterized by a greater reproductive investment by females than by males, for reasons such as egg production, energy expenditure to withstand harassment by males and selecting potential mates.Therefore, the present work aimed to identify factors that contribute to the reproductive success of Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) based on multiple mating and repeated mating tests.Quantitative and qualitative analyzes of the protein profile of adult females throughout the pre-and post-copulation periods were also carried out, as well as the analysis of the expression of the vitellogenin 2 gene in those periods.The frequency of bacterial infections of the seminal vesicle and the relative quantification of the abundance of two common seminal vesicle bacteria, Yokenella regensburgei and Staphylococcus sciuri in males were also investigated.The number of repeated copulations did not affect the fitness of E. heros females but mating with multiple males resulted in greater fecundity and longevity of E. heros females.Mating interfered with the amount of total proteins in the hemolymph of females, also affecting the qualitative and quantitative profile of hemolymph proteins.The expression of the vitellogenin 2 gene is not dependent on mating, but the expression of this gene is reactivated after mating by E. heros females.All seminal vesicles (100%) analyzed tested positive for bacterial infection.The infection of seminal vesicles was independent of mating, or the number of copulations performed.Yokenella regensburgei and Staphylococcus sciuri jointly infected male seminal vesicles, with Y. regensburgei being much more abundant than S. sciuri.
