Les sciences territoriales sont nées dans les années 1990 au Québec, en France et en Italie. L’usage croissant de la notion de territoire en langue anglaise tend à produire une ‘communauté de discours’, définie en linguistique comme un « groupe de personnes partageant une activité » (ici liée à la transformation de l’espace), dont les membres « ont généralement des objectifs partagés […] et peuvent avoir les mêmes valeurs et croyances » en mobilisant leur vocabulaire spécialisé comme avec le triptyque « Territoire/Territorialisation/Territo­rialité ». Cette proposition questionnera les enjeux conceptuels et pratiques de la traduction en anglais de ces travaux en français et italiens dans les disciplines « du projet » (aménagement, urbanisme, paysage et architecture). Depuis la période post-westphalienne dans une partie de l’Europe, un certain rapport à l’espace s’est prolongé jusqu’à aujourd’hui dans la construction d’identités collectives par l’association du territoire à des valeurs exogènes de stabilité et de continuité. Les mutations contemporaines (à la fois globales et locales) les complètent par d’autres, endogènes, plus processuelles et impermanentes. De nouvelles dynamiques apparaissent et participent : i) à exprimer un besoin croissant de territorialiser partout des composants essentiels de la vie sociale ; ii) à inscrire la « capacité à habiter » dans des choix de plus en plus individuels ; iii) à construire quelques conditions acceptables pour l’action commune à toutes les échelles et dans tous les contextes. Bref, la multiplicité des territoires libère de certaine contrainte du territoire conçu comme unifié.
