Abstract
This book provides an exploration of Italian and (to a lesser degree) French humanism, aiming for an analysis of the intersections between humanism and the areas of literature and philosophy.A helpful methodological aspect is the reference to visual sources (some of them supplied in colour reproductions) as well as textual ones.The book is organized in five chapters.The first one ("The Riddles of Renaissance Humanism") serves as an introduction to the whole.Its main sections explain the governing distinction used throughout the book of "finders" and "seekers" (see below) and how humanism fits (or doesn't) in current histories of philosophy.The core of the monograph is chapters 2 to 4, dedicated to the areas of knowledge, ethics, and metaphysics, respectively.Chapter 2 ("Esse et videri: To Be and to Seem") studies Trecento, Quattrocento, and (much more superficially) some sixteenth-century instances of this theme.The number of authors covered is very large: Petrarch, Boccaccio,
