Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The Quebec writer Hubert Aquin (1929-1977) establishes a dialogue with Honoré de Balzac in his literary and critical work, which gives rise to the author’s further consideration. It leads to the legitimization of this French Canadian as a writer while at the same time his delegitimization as a revolutionary. Witness to and actor in the Quiet Revolution in Quebec, this rebel asks his people to overcome an historical fatigue synonymous with political powerlessness. In Prochain épisode (1965), a bifurcated narrator moves between reality and fiction in se arch of a recovered political identity for his community. During this quest, allusions and references to Balzac and his work emerge, some in the protest mode of irony (Balzac’s hypothesis of sexual impotence formulated by Simenon) and some as rejection (“Balzac eliminated”). Others are more positive, such as the narrator’s attempt at positive renewal or in the codified arrangement of the Aquinian baroque (cryptograms from Ferragus and Physiologie du mariage ). In this process of (de)legitimization, Aquin mirrors Balzac’s aesthetics and literary composition. Characters, dismayed by living conditions, question their ability to cross society’s unspoken political and moral line, one that allows men and women to free themselves from arbitrary yet permanent contingencies that weigh upon them as historical beings. This investigation also focuses on the Balzacian network of characters that prefigures an anthropological stance, one that integrates all natural and cultural human capabilities.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
