Abstract
ResumenIntroducción: la poliomielitis paralizó a miles de niños en el siglo XX, pero gracias a la vacunación masiva se logró su erradicación.Hoy se calcula que existen entre 12 y 20 millones de personas con secuelas de polio (PCSP) quienes conforman un grupo de riesgo para fracturas en terreno patológico, consecuencia de la degeneración muscular y osteopatías asociadas.No hay consenso sobre su tratamiento.A través de este reporte de caso, se expone la problemática del manejo en las fracturas y sus complicaciones en PCSP y se propone una opción para el tratamiento de una fractura periprotésica en esta población.Presentación del caso: masculino de 46 años con secuela de polio, con dolor en extremidad inferior derecha posterior a caída de una silla, con antecedente de artroplastia de cadera derecha hace seis meses por fractura abrigada transcervical.Radiográficamente, muestra una fractura periprotésica Vancouver C. Se realiza reducción abierta de la fractura y se coloca placa anatómica de compresión de bloqueo tipo cable y cables de cerclaje.Se observa una adecuada evolución radiográfica.Conclusiones: la poliomielitis es una enfermedad erradicada; sin embargo, no debe ser ignorada pues las PCSP son un grupo de riesgo para fracturas en terreno patológico.Las fracturas y sus complicaciones en este tipo de pacientes son un reto para su abordaje.Hay una necesidad apremiante de pautas clínicas y quirúrgicas integrales que guíen su manejo.
