Il faut se remmorer l'argument de la Vita nuova. Le jeune pote Dante Alighieri, rcemment afflig par la mort de sa bien-aime Batrice, entreprend de grouper en recueil les pices les plus importantes de sa production potique. Comme l'avaient fait avant lui les troubadours occitans, ses modles en posie, il se cherche une justifi cation d'allure autobiographique, la manire d'un pont jet entre ses pomes et sa vie mme. C'est ce que les troubadours appelaient une razo, sorte de commentaire personnalis de leur production potique.
