Abstract
En Nouvelle-France, l’organisation de la défense du territoire et la planification des villes et des bourgs sont marquées par la transposition de modèles ou de concepts européens dans des contextes géographiques nouveaux. Des individus, les ingénieurs militaires, figurent parmi les principaux agents planificateurs du nouveau territoire, non seulement dans le domaine militaire, mais aussi dans toutes les sphères d’activité où la connaissance scientifique est requise. Ce sont les multiples facettes de l’urbanisme militaire en pays colonial qui sont présentées ici à travers la genèse et l’évolution de l’assiette urbaine de Québec, la capitale de cette grande colonie de la Nouvelle-France, et avec de nombreux exemples, puisés notamment au Canada et en Louisiane. Tout comme c’est le cas pour les fortifications, Vauban a largement influencé l’urbanisme colonial. Ses notions de planification urbaine ont primé ; il a déterminé la pratique professionnelle des ingénieurs militaires.
