En 2017, le Centre d'expertise et de formation sur les intégrismes religieux et la radicalisation (CEFIR) a entrepris une veille permanente sur les sites Web des groupes d'extrême droite au Québec (Laprise, 2017).À l'époque, cette veille avait permis de répertorier une bonne vingtaine de groupes identitaires sur les réseaux sociaux.Les revendications de ces groupes étaient extrêmement variées et parfois même contradictoires.Par contre, on pouvait déjà noter que tous les groupes étaient intransigeants et islamophobes, déployant leurs efforts contre un ennemi commun, les islamistes/musulmans (Gottschalk et Greenberg, 2007).Par exemple, nous avions pu constater la présence de nombreuses pages Facebook ouvertement islamophobes, comme « Contre l'islamisation du Québec » qui avait en mars 2017 environ 19 000 membres.Heureusement, cette page ne compte aujourd'hui que 247 membres, mais plusieurs autres pages similaires sont apparues depuis ce temps et les opinions islamophobes, sans toujours être nécessairement racistes, sont de plus en plus répandues dans certaines couches de la population québécoise.Ces opinions sont, la plupart du temps, dues à une très grande méconnaissance de l'islam (Wilkins-Laflamme, 2018) de la part de la population québécoise.Le 21 mars 2017, le CEFIR a organisé un colloque sur l'extrême droite au Québec au Cégep Édouard-Montpetit à Longueuil.Ce colloque a été perturbé par la présence très bruyante de deux groupes identitaires qui refusaient d'être catégorisés comme intransigeants ou islamophobes : La 1.
