Tradicionalmente, el turismo kuna ha sido estudiado bajo el prisma de la gobernanza kuna y su resistencia para preservar su patrimonio biocultural. En otras palabras, el marco para el análisis de la gestión turística kuna ha sido la larga historia de resistencia indígena a las políticas de aculturación y asimilación de los Estados-nación latinoamericanos. El estudio tiene el objetivo de posicionar la gestión turística kuna en general, y el ecoturismo kuna específicamente, en los debates animando los estudios turísticos pospandémicos en torno a los conceptos de posdesarrollo y decrecimiento. Para hacerlo, primero, se realizó una revisión de los proyectos o iniciativas ejecutados en la comarca entre 1979 y 2023, surgidos de la cooperación internacional con el objetivo de observar el tipo de proyectos ejecutados en materia turística y la autonomía kuna en el establecimiento de las prioridades de desarrollo frente a las tendencias a escala internacional. Después, se hizo una lectura de los proyectos llevados a cabo desde la perspectiva decrecencista para ver si los aspectos trabajos permiten concluir la presencia de un modelo de desarrollo alternativo al crecimiento.
