En su extraordinaria crónica, la Recordación Florida, Francisco Antonio de Fuentes y Guzmán (1642-1699) nos dejó una selección vertiginosa de observaciones sobre la tierra y la vida en Guatemala colonial. El tataranieto del conquistador Bernal Díazdel Castillo, Fuentes y Guzmán, es la personificación de las rivalidades y tensiones que se dieron en el transcurso del tiempo entre españoles y criollos, a menudo hastael punto del conflicto, respecto a derechos y privilegios, sobre todo cuando se trataba de la explotación de los frutos del trabajo indígena. Los criollos mostraban marcados conflictos de identidad, venerando sus raíces hispánicas a la vez que luchaban por afirmarse a sí mismos, nacidos y criados en el Nuevo Mundo como diferentes, pero igualmente merecedores que sus antepasados de la Península Ibérica. Su portavozmás representativo fue Fuentes y Guzmán, elocuente, aunque intrincado; lúcido, pero a la vez opaco, un emblema barroco en palabras y en obras. Severo Martínez Peláez (1925-1998) escarba la Recordación Florida, con infortunios y todo, y convierte a Fuentes y Guzmán en un personaje crucial de La patria del criollo (1970), su crítica marxista de cómo se llegó a formar Guatemala. El examinar cómo un texto clave influye a otro nos permite atisbar cómo las experiencias infantiles de estos dos hombres tienen muchos puntos de comparación, resaltando de vez en cuando su modo de representar las relaciones étnicas en la tierra que ambos amaron.
