This book listens closely to Inuit music histories in what is currently known as Alaska as sounded across a vast archive of recordings from the 1950s to the present. In writing these histories, I amplify and perform Native ways of doing music history—through a series of relational and radical methods, theories, and analytics—as a means to more fully explain what is at stake when listening for structures of Indigeneity in ways that advance Indigenous self-determination and resurgence movements. This work analyzes a range of musical styles, repertoire, and aesthetics by foregrounding Inuit intellectual, historical, and performance traditions as genealogies of practice that are simultaneously autonomous from yet intertwined with structures of colonialism. One of this book’s interventions in American music historiography is to address how Inuit (a presumably peripheral population) sound their presence in relation to (not separate from) mainstream America (a presumably central population), who knows so little about them and thus assumes they are absent or silent. Throughout this book, I emphasize the significance of recognizing the density (not difference) of Alaska Native ways of musicking, and how histories that foreground the density of our Indigenous being since time immemorial are vital to advancing our resurgence.
