Abstract
This volume, carefully written and well researched by Barbara Deutschmann, is an excellent addition to T&T Clark's Hebrew Bible series.She analyses in detail every aspect of the female, the male, gender assumptions and their relationship as known in the book of Genesis 2-4, seeking out the meaning of sex, gender, partnerships, differences and sameness.This book is a meticulous literary critical study of the texts themselves and the history of their reception up to and into our times.Deutschmann points out that she does wish not only to enter the conversation with twenty-first-century reading communities but also to bring her own perspective as an educated Western woman into the conversation.Deutschmann begins by presenting the questions, assumptions and traditional viewpoints with regard to the Garden of Eden and its dwellers, Eve and Adam, noting how the Garden story resonates with the Wisdom literature.Here, and throughout the volume, she carefully studies each relevant Hebrew word in the text being studied.She points out that this volume will come through a feminist lens which is intended to shine a critical light on relations of power as related to sex/gender relations.She also notes that her methodology will blend exegesis with literary, theological and sociological considerations.She points out that she still always reads the texts as scripture, listening for God's voice.From here, Deutschmann's analysis begins first with regard to the garden as the setting or tableau in which the narrative takes place, noting its similarity to that of the Mesopotamian creation myths.She then looks at the order of creation and investigates the grammatical understanding of the Hebrew words to assist in understanding.Then, most importantly, she studies the establishment of the partnership between woman and man.Chapter Three continues with their partnership in action, the issue of nakedness and clothing and matters regarding the serpent.The fourth chapter examines the entrance of the brothers Cain and Abel into the story and examines the issues of their troubled relationship, as well as the complexity for parents dealing with their children.In Chapter Five, the Eve-Adam partnership is illuminated, and twenty-first-century perspectives are considered.Deutschmann brings in ideas from Foucault, Laqueur, Butler and Fausto-Sterling about sex and gender disparities and how our differentiated understandings of the sexes may affect our translation choices.Chapter Six addresses the gendered male and the gendered female.The seventh chapter moves on to such issues as interrogating patriarchy, Torah, same-sex sexuality, political matters related to sex and sexuality in the books of Ruth and Song of Songs.The eighth chapter looks back on earlier hierarchical and early Christian perspectives, and
