Les préoccupations environnementales représentent des enjeux économiques et sociopolitiques auxquels les entreprises peuvent de moins en moins se soustraire sans compromettre leur légitimité, voire leur ­pérennité. Alors que les enjeux écologiques sont ancrés dans la réalité des phénomènes biophysiques, les réflexions sur la gestion environnementale demeurent centrées surtout sur les apparences plus rassurantes, plus faciles à appréhender et souvent superficielles du « côté jardin » : politiques officielles, discours convenus, systèmes de gestion formels, etc. Cet ouvrage analyse leur « côté cour » à partir d’études de cas dans l’industrie canadienne. Des exemples concrets montrent comment la participation des employés et la mobilisation des savoirs opérationnels contribuent à la prévention de la pollution. Des entretiens à l’intérieur d’usines considérées comme de « grands émetteurs industriels » offrent un « regard interne » éclairant sur la prise en compte réelle des questions environnementales dans les entreprises. L’ouvrage montre également la complexité de ces enjeux et la façon de ­réduire de façon substantielle les conséquences environnementales sans nécessairement recourir à des solutions technologiques coûteuses. L’ouvrage s’adresse autant aux praticiens qu’aux universitaires ou à ceux qui souhaitent mieux comprendre comment les organisations peuvent intégrer les préoccupations environnementales dans leur gestion quotidienne.
