Abstract
This book had its origin some twenty years ago when I received a handsome grant from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada for a research project called “Words in Freedom: The Visual Language of the European Modernist Avant-Garde.” When I accepted the Lanier professorship at the University of Georgia in 2001, I had to forfeit that grant, which could only be administered through a Canadian university. Consequently, my ongoing research overflowed the banks defined by that project, and by 2006 I had in hand a manuscript too ungainly to fit into one book, subsequently yielding Acrobatic Modernism and its predecessor, History of a Shiver: The Sublime Impudence of Modernism. While together they do offer a chronological and revisionary account of modernism, it’s not necessary to have read the earlier title before reading this one. There’s more germane overlap with my history of the Dada movement, Destruction Was My Beatrice (Basic Books, 2015), a subject intermittently glimpsed in the following pages. Above all, I would recommend the considerable body of materials culled from rare archival sources in the anthology Burning City: Poems of Metropolitan Modernity (Action Books, 2012), which I co-edited with Tim Conley. Virtually every text in its five hundred oversize pages was eligible for quoting here, an urge I’ve largely resisted, for this book is ample enough already. And concerning its avowedly unorthodox drift, I’ll say of my book what Jean Cocteau confides to the reader of his play The Human Voice: it’s the result of “un dosage attentif.”1
