Jack Kerouac, l'écrivain de On the Road et père de la Beat Generation est considéré par beaucoup comme une très grande figure de la littérature américaine.Or Kerouac, né en 1922 à Lowell, Massachusetts, vient d'un milieu prolétaire Canadien français.Or on sait depuis longtemps, grâce à des interviews télévisés et des allusions dans ses textes anglophones, que Kerouac écrivait aussi en français.Mais c'est surtout depuis la publication d'une partie de ses textes francophones par Jean-Christophe Cloutier en 2016 et la nouvelle biographie de l'écrivain par Joyce Johnsosn, The Voice is All, où l'auteur insiste sur l'importance de ses origines canadienne-françaises dans sa littérature, que cette question est devenue centrale, car comment définir un écrivain bilingue qui n'a jamais publié un texte entier dans sa langue natale ?Kerouac est-il un écrivain américain, ou canadien-français américain ?À la lumière de théories contemporaines sur l'identité coloniale et post-coloniale appliquées à ce cas particulier, j'essaierai de redéfinir les contours de ce qu'on pourrait appeler une "identité littéraire" et de ce qu'elle suppose comme fertilité et comme conflits.
