Abstract
This doctoral thesis analyzes young characters’ identity representations in the fictional works of Pier Vittorio Tondelli, one of the most important Italian writers representing the Italian youth and the changes they experienced during the 1980s. My analysis is based on some of the author’s considerations in the novel Un weekend postmoderno and on the concepts of fauna (fauna) and tribù (tribe). To create a more in-depth analysis, I integrate these concepts with others found in social psychology, an academic subject which was also part of Tondelli’s higher education, as I could ascertain through my research at Einaudi’s Library in Correggio. In the first chapter of the thesis, I analyze the representations of the relationships between the young characters in Tondell’s works, adult society, and the social dimension of the youth. The second chapter focuses on the representation of the time horizon within which young characters perceive themselves. Finally, the last chapter analyzes the languages used by the young narrators of the author’s stories and novels, highlighting hybrid structures and their links with identity connotations. Based on my study, I conclude that at the base of social young people’s identities as represented by Tondelli in his works of fiction, there is a core identity. I define this core identity as a “sensori-emotional” one, because it is expressed in some languages by these two elements. These languages also condense some dynamics connoting young people's identities that emerge in my work, namely, the propensity to place oneself in a social horizon separate from the adult one, the conception of a young social dimension as the predominant one and the tendency to perceive oneself in a time horizon linked to the present.
