Abstract
Un siècle après l'invention du mot « folklore » par William John Thoms, le jeune titulaire de la première chaire de folklore établie en Amérique du Nord inaugurait aux Éditions Fides de Montréal une série de « Publications de l'Université Laval ».En tête du premier volume, en guise de manifeste, un titre traçait le projet : « Les Archives de folklore, recueil semestriel de traditions françaises d'Amérique.Documents et études sur les moeurs, coutumes, croyances, légendes, contes, chansons, langue et arts populaires [du Canada français] ».Toutefois, des raisons d'ordre pécuniaire empêcheront Luc Lacourcière de remplir la totalité de sa promesse, le forçant à limiter sa parution à un numéro annuel puis à retrancher à son tirage un millier d'exemplaires ; l'étendue de son réseau de correspondants et le rayonnement international du périodique ne pouvant abolir le déficit « très local », le directeur suspendit bientôt, après le quatrième numéro, la production de ces beaux cahiers « sur papier Louvain antique imprimés en cochin "C" ».Avaient alors collaboré à cette noble et audacieuse entreprise les premiers artisans de l'ethnologie d'ici (
