There is considerable evidence that the superconductivity of <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <a:mrow> <a:msub> <a:mi>Sr</a:mi> <a:mn>2</a:mn> </a:msub> <a:msub> <a:mi>RuO</a:mi> <a:mn>4</a:mn> </a:msub> </a:mrow> </a:math> has two components. Among this evidence is a jump in the shear elastic modulus <b:math xmlns:b="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <b:msub> <b:mi>c</b:mi> <b:mn>66</b:mn> </b:msub> </b:math> at the critical temperature <c:math xmlns:c="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <c:msub> <c:mi>T</c:mi> <c:mi>c</c:mi> </c:msub> </c:math> , observed in ultrasound measurements. Such a jump is forbidden for homogeneous single-component order parameters, and it implies that <d:math xmlns:d="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <d:msub> <d:mi>T</d:mi> <d:mi>c</d:mi> </d:msub> </d:math> should develop as a cusp under the application of shear strain with <e:math xmlns:e="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <e:mrow> <e:mo>〈</e:mo> <e:mn>110</e:mn> <e:mo>〉</e:mo> </e:mrow> </e:math> principal axes. This shear strain should split the onset temperatures of the two components, if they coexist, or select one component if they do not. Here, we report measurements of <f:math xmlns:f="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <f:msub> <f:mi>T</f:mi> <f:mi>c</f:mi> </f:msub> </f:math> and the elastocaloric effect of <g:math xmlns:g="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <g:mrow> <g:msub> <g:mi>Sr</g:mi> <g:mn>2</g:mn> </g:msub> <g:msub> <g:mi>RuO</g:mi> <g:mn>4</g:mn> </g:msub> </g:mrow> </g:math> under uniaxial stress applied along the [110] lattice direction. Within experimental resolution, we resolve neither a cusp in the stress dependence of <h:math xmlns:h="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <h:msub> <h:mi>T</h:mi> <h:mi>c</h:mi> </h:msub> </h:math> , nor any second transition in the elastocaloric effect data. We show that reconciling these null results with the observed jumps in <i:math xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <i:msub> <i:mi>c</i:mi> <i:mn>66</i:mn> </i:msub> </i:math> requires extraordinarily fine tuning to a triple point of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter space. In addition, our results are inconsistent with homogeneous time-reversal symmetry breaking at a temperature <j:math xmlns:j="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <j:mrow> <j:msub> <j:mi>T</j:mi> <j:mn>2</j:mn> </j:msub> <j:mo>≤</j:mo> <j:msub> <j:mi>T</j:mi> <j:mi>c</j:mi> </j:msub> </j:mrow> </j:math> as identified in muon spin relaxation experiments.
