Abstract
Young adults with long-term illnesses or disabilities risked ending up in limbo when they made the transition from paediatric to adult care, according to a Swedish interview study by Forsberg et al.1 The participants, who were 18–25 years of age, said they felt insecure during the transition, as they did not know when, or even if, something would happen or whether they would be overlooked. The authors concluded that the existing preparation programmes by paediatric units needed to be accompanied by structured transition plans from the adult healthcare units that take over the patients' care. https://doi.org/10.1111/apa.17231 Using follow-up video consultations was a viable way of delivering an early discharge programme for preterm infants, according to an observational study by Gustavsen et al.2 The 72 preterm infants who were included in the programme were discharged from a Norwegian hospital at a median of 35 + 6 weeks/days of postmenstrual age. The authors concluded that the infants' growth was sufficient, breastfeeding rates were maintained and the video consultations contributed to ensuring that the parents felt safe caring for their infant at home. The parents used the programme for a median of 18 days and there were only four readmissions. https://doi.org/10.1111/apa.17250 Monaci et al investigated what effect maternal singing had on pain expressions when infants aged 2–4 months were immunised.3 They recruited 67 mother–infant dyads in Italy and randomly allocated them to a singing intervention group or a control group. The result showed that maternal live singing significantly reduced the infants' pain behaviour movement indexes. It also significantly increased social gazing between the mothers and infants, which is particularly beneficial for promoting attachment, and reduced the mothers' anxiety. Those were the main findings when Hershon et al studied 444 Canadian mother-infant dyads, to identify any associations between feeding methods at 6 and 12 months and infant sleep over the first 3 years of life.5 Breastfed infants had less consolidated sleep between 6 and 12 months, but not beyond. The authors state that there is no need for parents to hesitate to breastfeed because of potential concerns about their infant's sleep patterns. https://doi.org/10.1111/apa.17237 The incidence of neonatal hypothermia was 52.5% in a systematic review and meta-analysis by Ruan et al, which focused on 44 532 newborn infants in 18 studies from 13 countries.6 Factors that affected the incidence rates were no skin-to-skin contact, prematurity, low birth weights, delayed breastfeeding, asphyxiation and resuscitation after birth, low APGAR scores, not wearing a cap and Caesarean sections.
