Introdução: A religião é um fenômeno típica e universalmente humana estudada pelos mais variados campos do conhecimento humano. Objetivo: analisar aspectos históricos, antropológicos, epistemológicos, metodológicos assim como o projeto político-pedagógico da implantação do curso de graduação de Ciência da Religião, que foi produzido na esfera do Departamento de Ciência da Religião (DCRE) da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF), com a intenção à implantação do curso de Ciência da Religião em uma universidade pública federal. Método: O método adotado foi a revisão de literatura com teóricos consagrados como Almeida, Funari (2016), Dilthey (2010), Eller (2018), Huff Júnior, Portella (2012), Novinsky (2015), Pieper (2018), Pye (2010), Stern (2020) dentre outros autores dentro de uma abordagem qualitativa. Resultados: Discutimos e debatemos sobre alguns pensamentos, métodos e epistemologia à pesquisa em Ciência da Religião. Conclusões: Chegou-se a conclusão de que a Ciência da Religião tem um caráter plurimetodológico, engloba teorias produzidas por várias áreas do saber e contribui para o estudo da religião como um fenômeno especificamente humano, universal e sob uma ótica própria, não apologética e pluralista.
