Une nouvelle génération d’humoristes composée des Chick’n Swell, des Denis Drolet, de Jean-Thomas Jobin, André Sauvé et autres, influencés par leur « père spirituel » Bruno Blanchet, forme ce que l’auteur appelle l’humour absurde moderne québécois. Ce style particulier semble être un caméléon dont l’identité reste encore ambiguë, les frontières difficiles à définir. D’où vient cet intérêt marqué pour le non-sens et le « n’importe quoi » ? Qu’est-ce qui est drôle dans cette forme d’humour ? Est-ce une fuite ou un combat? Cet essai répond à ces questions en dressant un portrait concret et analytique des humoristes de l’absurde au Québec et en explorant la profondeur de ce type d’humour ainsi que son lien avec le contexte psychosocial dans lequel il prend forme. À la fois un refuge et une douce révolte, l’auteur montre que l’humour absurde moderne exerce un contrepoids à une société de performance axée sur la compétition. Qu’il s’en prenne à la logique, à la raison, au temps ou aux choses tragiques de la vie, l’humour absurde moderne exprime une façon indirecte de contester les valeurs d’une société programmée. Anarchique dans son imaginaire et trop flou pour être censuré, l’humoriste absurde moderne québécois recherche l’étonnement constant en enfreignant les règles du monologue standard. Cet humour spontané qui n’agresse pas se marie parfaitement bien avec la philosophie et les valeurs actuelles de la jeunesse québécoise : la recherche de la spontanéité et de l’authenticité, la tolérance, la cordialité, la liberté, l’hédonisme et l’indifférence.
