A base desse estudo iconológico são três emblemas [Omnia vencit amor (1601) de Daniël Heinsius (1580-1655) com uma subscriptio de Hugo Grotius (1583-1645); Hugo Grotius com 49 anos (1632) com uma subscriptio de Daniël Heinsius e a capa da edição inglesa da obra Lei para Guerra e Paz de Grotius (1654) com um epigrama de Heinsius de 1632. O desafio da análise iconológica dos três epígrafos nas gravuras e no livro reside no fato que os dois homens, depois de uma fase de amizade acadêmica, pertenciam ao Sínodo de Dort (1618-1619) a grupos opostos, sendo Grotius apoiador do grupo dos remonstrantes ou seguidores de Jacobus Armínius (1560-1609), já Heinsius integrante do grupo dos gomares ou seguidor de Franciscus Gomarus (1563-1541) e secretário dos Estados Gerais. Na ocasião, Grotius foi condenado a pena de prisão perpétua, porém conseguiu fugir da prisão em 1621 para a França de onde entrou no serviço diplomático sueco em 1635, após uma tentativa frustrada de retornar para os Países Baixos durante os anos de 1631-1632. As iconografias e os epígrafos são lidos diante desse contexto a partir do método iconológico de Erwin Panofsky em combinação com a teoria de emblemas. A pergunta norteadora dessa pesquisa é: o que emblemas e epigramas revelam sobre uma eventual reaproximação ente Heinsius e Grotius a partir de 1632? Como resultado demonstra-se que o emblema e epígrafo de 1632 unem argumentos que fazem uma retomada do contato entre os dois plausível, inclusive, com um tom de apreciação.
