l'indicible GlouglousBien que taboue, la question des mères célibataires n'est pas indicible au Québec dans les années 1930 et 1940.De nombreuses romancières l'abordent de front, à commencer par Jovette Bernier dans La chair décevante (1931).Dans l'un des premiers textes qu'elle publie après son déménagement à Montréal, « Mater dolorosa 98 », Guèvremont elle-même se porte à la défense d'Hélène Vinet, mère célibataire de 32 ans dont l'enfant est mort le 17 mars 1937 d'un œdème pulmonaire provoqué par le froid sur le mont Royal.La mère attendait alors le père du bébé au milieu d'une violente tempête de neige.Le corps du nouveau-né, abandonné par la mère, est retrouvé le 13 avril.Accusée d'homicide involontaire, Hélène Vinet est acquittée le 27 octobre 1937.Guèvremont décrit son « intérêt indicible » pour ce fait divers : C'est à la pointe d'un jour terne que je connus le verdict.La veille, je m'étais endormie tellement pénétrée de l'idée de savoir la fin de ce procès que le déclic de la boîte à lettres par où, chaque matin, pénètrent chez moi les nouvelles du monde entier, me réveilla aussi sûrement qu'une main froide posée sur mon épaule.Machinalement, je regardai cette rue Sherbrooke qui borne mon horizon : elle s'agitait déjà.Il pleuvrait sûrement toute la journée.Tout de même, le soleil pourrait paraître avant onze heures.J'avais suivi toutes les phases du procès avec un intérêt indicible et au moment 98.
