influence the above.Few human studies have been conducted evaluating the effect of blueberries on MetS; however, the results are frequently inconsistent.This study attempts to test the hypothesis that wild blueberries can normalize MetS risk factors, improve endothelial function and permeability, and reduce inflammation.Methods: Thirty-two subjects with risk factors for MetS will be enrolled for a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover trial (BLUMET).Subjects will consume 240 ml/day of a wild blueberry drink (WB providing at least 560 mg of anthocyanins and 200 mg of chlorogenic acid) or a placebo drink.Each treatment will be 8 weeks long and separated by an 8-week washout period.At the beginning and at the end of each intervention period, blood will be collected from each participant.The primary outcome will be the improvement of reactive hyperemia index, as marker of vascular function, measured by Endo-PAT2000.Additional markers include blood pressure, anthropometric and cardiometabolic parameters, arterial stiffness, markers of endothelial functionality and permeability (e.g., vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, vascular endothelial cadherin, occludin), inflammation (e.g., tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6), and oxidative stress (e.g., lipid and protein oxidation products).Compliance will be assessed through food diaries.The study has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Milan.Results: N/A. Conclusions:Results from the BLUMET study will improve knowledge on the protective effects of WB and identify their mechanisms of action including those related to vascular function and its permeability.
