Il a été suggéré que les données provenant de médias sociaux pourraient être utilisées pour évaluer l'acceptation des mesures de santé publique (MSP) par la population. L'objectif de cette étude vise à évaluer la capacité d'algorithmes à identifier les sujets et les sentiments de gazouillis relatifs aux MSP. Nous avons extrait des gazouillis canadiens mentionnant des mots-clés liés à la COVID-19 (décembre 2020-août 2021). Les gazouillis ont été classés par sujet (port du masque, vaccination, distanciation sociale) grâce à un algorithme filtrant des mots-clés. Le sentiment face aux MSP a été déterminé en dichotomisant, selon différents seuils, la valence (échelle : 0 à 1) prédite par un modèle neuronal permettant de déterminer si un gazouillis est plutôt positif ou négatif. Les gazouillis ont également été classés par cinq annotateurs de la plateforme « Amazon MTurk ». Nous avons calculé la sensibilité (SE) et la spécificité (SP), et leurs intervalles de crédibilité bayésiennes 95%, des algorithmes et des annotateurs avec des modèles bayésiens de classe latente (BACL) hiérarchiques. Nous avons sélectionné 443 gazouillis pour la classification des sujets et 801 pour la classification des sentiments. La SP de l'algorithme pour classer tous les sujets était presque parfaite, mais la SE variait de 0,65 (0,55-0,74) pour la distanciation sociale à 0,82 (0,77-0,87) pour la vaccination. Par contre, l'algorithme pour classer les sentiments performait mal peu importe la valeur seuil utilisée. Par exemple, en utilisant une valeur de ≥0,45 pour un sentiment positif, l'algorithme avait une SE de 0,37 (0,30-0,45) et une SP de 0,71 (0,66-0,77) alors que le meilleur annotateur avait une SE de 0,84 (0,79-0,89) et une SP de 0,94 (0,91-0,97). Malgré la capacité de l'algorithme à classer les sujets, nos résultats démontrent qu'il serait prématuré d'utiliser celui classant les sentiments pour déterminer l'acceptation des MSP par la population.
