Abstract
De la lignée des Cartier, Radisson et d’Iberville, le capitaine Joseph-Elzéar Bernier est le dernier de nos grands découvreurs. Fils et petit-fils de marin, mousse à 14 ans, capitaine à 17, il traversa plus de 250 fois l’Atlantique avant de s’aventurer dans les eaux alors à peine connues du Grand Nord. Son époque – 1852-1934 –, c’est celle des derniers grands voiliers, précurseurs de la mondialisation du commerce, des florissants chantiers navals de Québec, l’époque des « bateaux de bois et hommes de fer ». À bord de ces récits, vous traverserez près de cent ans de notre histoire. Ce marin de talent fut salué par des princes; il baptisa des îles, renfloua des navires, acquit des connaissances considérables, écrivit régulièrement son journal, prononça de nombreuses conférences, amassa une petite fortune puis la dépensa à convaincre ses concitoyens de la nécessité pour le Canada de s’approprier le Nord. Car l’homme voyait grand et voyait loin. Cent ans après les expéditions arctiques de Bernier et la course vers le pôle Nord, nos gouvernements découvrent à leur tour l’immense potentiel du Nord, que convoitent aussi plusieurs pays étrangers.
