Abstract
Le présent article s’intéresse à l’intertextualité biblique dans L’Évangile du nouveau monde (2021) de Maryse Condé. Il cherche à démontrer que la figure christique et les références sacrées sont soumises à un procès de métissage qui entre en dialogue avec une perspective décoloniale inspirée par les thèses d’Édouard Glissant. Ce procès de métissage permet de critiquer l’universel unifiant et la pensée du système qui fondent tant l’idéologie coloniale que l’utopie. Ainsi, après avoir souligné la capacité de la société caribéenne à assimiler et à traduire l’imaginaire biblique comme une composante culturelle créole, l’analyse se centre sur Pascal comme Christ métis qui, par ses caractéristiques, déconstruit les principes fondateurs de la pensée coloniale. À travers l’échec des projets révolutionnaires du protagoniste, le roman est ensuite envisagé comme une critique de l’utopie. Le métissage se voit dès lors appréhendé comme une éthique de la diversité opposée à toute totalisation systématique — qu’elle soit coloniale ou utopique. Abstract This paper focuses on the biblical intertextuality in Maryse Condé’s L’Évangile du nouveau monde (2021). It aims at demonstrating that the Christ-like character and the religious references are subjected to a hybridization process that can be related to a decolonial perspective inspired by Édouard Glissant’s ideas. This hybridization process deconstructs the unifying universal and the “system thought” defining colonial ideology and utopia. Therefore, after highlighting the ability of the Caribbean society to assimilate and translate the biblical imaginary as a creole cultural feature, the analysis focuses on Pascal as a hybrid Christ characterized in a way that undermines the principles of colonialism. Based on the failure of the protagonist’s revolutionary dreams, the novel is also considered a critique of utopia. Hybridization consequently appears as an ethic of diversity opposed to any systematic totality, whether colonial or utopian.
