Abstract
This contribution expands existing studies on the history of the museum shop as a space between art and retail through a discussion of the Aga Khan Museum Shop in Toronto (AKMS). The AKMS was opened at the same time as the private Aga Khan Museum (AKM) in 2014 and is part of the transnational institutional framework of Ismaili Muslims following the Sevener Shia. I analyze the shop’s architectural design, tonality in public communication, and staff and particularly focus on its collection- and exhibition-inspired product line gained through collaborations with artisans and visual artists from the MENASA region (the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia). Connecting this with perspectives on the historiography of Islamic art allows me to argue that the AKMS embodies a convergence of the symbolic site of the Islamic art museum shop rooted in both consumerist dreamworlds and tasteful design, the Aga Khan’s religious-political agenda and pressure to demonstrate legitimacy within the umma , and Ismaili approaches of culturizing Islam as transcultural heritage. In operating together, these factors generate a commercial site offering products that ideally meet consumer demands of late modern hyperculture in their ability to display authenticity and conspicuous cosmopolitanism. I conclude with the observation that by staging products as signifiers of transculturality and authenticity and by mobilizing nineteenth-century uses of Islamic art for the curation of the self, the AKMS reinvents aura after the age of mechanical reproduction.
