First light results of REVOLT-COPPER: a pyramid wavefront sensor on a 1.2m telescope

Abstract
REVOLT (Research, Experiment and Validation of Adaptive Optics with a Legacy Telescope)—the local adaptive optics (AO) system at National Research Council's Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre (NRC-Herzberg)—is an on-sky testbed for a variety of new technologies and algorithms, including the Herzberg Extensible Adaptive optics Real-time Toolkit (HEART). In this paper, we show first light results from a recent expansion of REVOLT to include a second closed-loop wavefront sensing path using a pyramid wavefront sensor (PWFS), REVOLT-COPPER (Canadian On-sky Platform for PWFS Experimental Research). We show successful operation of a modulated PWFS using the Gemini Planet Imager 2 (GPI2) HEART pipeline where we use a PWFS pixels-to-modes reconstructor, bypassing the need to calculate PWFS slopes first. We also present analysis of REVOLT-COPPER's performance and discuss the on-going research and development effort at NRC-Herzberg.
