Contarinia nasturtii , the swede midge, is an invasive pest of vegetables and oilseed crops in the family Brassicacea. Larval feeding by swede midge damages the growing points of the host plant and can result in significant yield loss in both vegetable and canola crops. To date, swede midge is not established in western Canada, but a close relative, Contarinia brassicola , the canola flower midge, is widespread on the prairies (i.e., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta) and is present in Ontario as well. Economic damage associated with C. brassicola appears to be rare. Foreign exploration for potential biological control agents of swede midge was conducted in Europe, where parasitoids were observed parasitizing swede midge larvae, but these species were not sufficiently host specific to justify further investigation for importation biological control. Sampling in western Canada has revealed that at least two parasitoids parasitize C. brassicola ; these species are likely undescribed. The chapter reviews the management and status of biological control research for both midge species.
