The Effect of Mulligan MWM Along with Agility Exercises in Knee Osteoarthritis Patients- An Interventional Study

BACKGROUND: OA is a chronic, heterogeneous set of joint disorders that is usually seen in clinical settings. Global health reports gave fourth & eighth rank to knee joint osteoarthritis for making women & men disabled frequently. OA is categorized into primary and secondary types. Idiopathic primary cause usually manifest in old age. Clinically, it involves pain, swollen joints, morning stiffness, coarse crepitation, reduced joint range of motion, malformation and instability in the joints, weakness and atrophy of muscles, and with difficulty in ADLs like walking, squatting, climbing stairs, and getting up from a chair. The purpose of the present research was to determine whether MWM, when added to agility training, might boost knee OA recovery and help plan a new rehabilitation protocol. OBJECTIVES: To ascertain the effects of moist heat and MWM in knee OA patients. To ascertain the effect of moist heat, MWM, and agility exercises in people with knee OA. METHOD: An interventional study was done on knee OA individuals who passed the research’s selection criteria. Total sixty subjects were divided into two groups. The outcomes used for the assessment of the patients were the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Western Ontario McMaster OA (WOMAC) Index of the knee, and the ROM through Universal goniometer. The data was collected at the baseline and after 2 weeks of intervention. RESULT: For the data analysis of demographic and baseline characteristics, independent t-test and chi-square test were used. Pre- and post-test differences within and between the groups were compared using the Wilcoxon signed rank test and the Mann-Whitney U test. The associative variables were age (p= 0.20) and gender (p= 0.164). The median differences (IQR) for comparing between groups were for the VAS [2 (2, 3)], the WOMAC [22 (18, 24)], Knee flexion [110 (105, 120)], and Knee extension [10 (6.25, 10)] respectively. CONCLUSION: The evidence provided in the study revealed that the effects of moist heat, Mulligan’s mobilization with movement (MWM) and agility exercises showed better results in comparison to moist heat & MWM alone after 2 weeks of intervention.
