Dans la littérature de langue française de la Polynésie française, la recherche des moyens d'expression linguistique de la population autochtone dans ses propres textes prend des formes diverses depuis les années 1990. Selon le chercheur mā'ohi Bruno Saura, l'autochtonie désigne l'ascendance prématurée d'une personne d'un lieu géographique particulier, qui peut s'y établir plus tôt, contrairement à d'autres immigrants. Le contexte colonial joue un rôle déterminant à cet égard. L’article explore le lien émotionnel et historique des écrivaines mā’ohi Chantal T. Spitz et Rai Chaze avec les îles polynésiennes. Dans ses premières œuvres (L’île des rêves écrasés (1991) et Vai. La rivière au ciel sans nuages (1990)), elles représentent à la fois les blessures de la conquête coloniale et les rites traditionnels qui caractérisent la population autochtone, comme le symbole de l'enterrement du placenta d'un nouveau-né pour nourrir un arbre qui, par ses racines, lie l'enfant à la terre et le nourrit également. En ce qui concerne Spitz, son texte plus récent Cartes postales (2015) montre qu'il existe aussi des troubles et des problèmes sociaux dans une communauté polynésienne présumée harmonieuse. L'illusion imaginaire et la désillusion réaliste sont étroitement liées.
